The village of Altamont boasts two wineries, Altamont Vineyard & Winery and Meadowdale Winery. Both offer a unique selection of locally-made wines and jaw-dropping views of nature. Prefer beer or cider? After an afternoon of apple picking, head to the Biergarten at Indian Ladder Farms Cidery & Brewery for a pint or a bite to eat.
Altamont is a small, cozy place, where most of the businesses of note are on or within a few blocks of Main Street, a librarian hosts morning story time in a park where a strawberry festival will be held hours later, and another park has a labyrinth made with stones gathered from the nearby Bozen Kill Preserve.
Altamont’s connection to the past, and to its role as a hub for the rural agriculture that surrounds it, is most evident in its Museum in the Streets history tour. Each of the nearly 30 stops hosts an information plaque, and a large, handsome sign in the park next to the library offers an overview of the self-guided walking tour.
One of the most iconic buildings in the village is the Altamont Free Library, housed in a former train station. Commuter-rail service between Altamont and Albany ended in 1963.The Altamont Fair includes carnival rides and games, as well as livestock competitions and live music and hosts up to 60,000 guests yearly!
